: PORTRAITS OF GRACE FOR THE BERTA BALEARIC?

a species already under serious threat of extinction, such as Balearic shearwater, could be the coup de grace after the sinking of the tanker Prestige off Galicia yesterday. BirdLife International, the largest global network of associations for the protection of birds, and LIPU , which BirdLife is the Italian representative, sounded the alarm. The species has suffered a drastic reduction of 50% over the last nine years, and now fears the worst. Together with the Balearic Berta, tens of thousands of seabirds could be affected in the coming hours on oil from the tanker spilled. And if the weather will get worse, migrating birds may be attracted by the apparently calm polluted water from the fuel to finish some inevitably contaminated. < Carlota Viada, the conservative sectors of English Ornithological Society (SEO / BirdLife), one of the organizations that are working in the disaster area - are reaping hundreds of birds smeared with oil, of which there are species such as the Razorbill, the Sula, the Uriah, the Shag and various sea ducks. Our volunteers are monitoring the beaches, in cooperation with the authorities, and leading to the recovery centers affected birds. Of course after the sinking of the Prestige, the threat to these species and for at least another dozen rose dramatically>>. At the risk
seabirds such as gulls, storm petrel, guillemot and Berta in the Balearics. But ducks and waders .

The species most at risk:
Berta Balearic (Puffinus mauretannicus) - seriously endangered species living in the Balearic Islands. The population has declined by 47% in nine years, from 3,300 pairs in 1991 to 1750-2125 in 2001. (SEO-BirdLife data). At this rate, the decline will be close to 100% over the next 54 years.
shearwater (Puffinus Puffinus) - Species present in large numbers the British Isles. The disaster area is a step in making migration to South America.
storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) - Lives in the British Isles and spends the winter in the Atlantic Ocean.
Sula (Northern Gannets) - The Sula lives in the winter season in the Atlantic.
Shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis) - Lives on the rocks of the coast.
